What You Can Do to STOP Shambala

The LIOC-Endangered Species Conservation Federation needs your help to stop the Shambala Bill.

Write to the Members of the Subcommittee

The Subcommittee on Fisheries Conservation, Wildlife & Oceans will be studing and evaluating the Shambala Bill. The members of this committee need to understand why this bill is wrong and they need to hear it from you. Please write to one, some or all of the members of this subcommitte and explain to them why you do not want Shambala to be passed. Feel free to borrow any information or content on the LIOC web site to include in your letter. This is very important, because the subcommittee has the power to kill this bill and if we can get them to understand our position on this, they could do that for us.

Names, address, phone numbers and email address for the subcommittee on Fisheries Conservation, Wildlife & Oceans can be found at: http://www.lioc.org/Shambala/Subcommittee.html

Write to the Members of the Committee

If the Subcommittee on Fisheries Conservation, Wildlife & Oceans concludes that the the bill is sound and that it has a good chance of being passed, they will refer it to the Committee on Agriculture for their review and recommendation. If this bill gets this far it is crucial that each of the members on the Committee understand why the Shambala bill is wrong and why it should not be made into law. By contacting the members of the Committee on Agriculture we can show them our position on this bill, as well as make it clear to them how many people and animals the bill will be affecting.

Names, address, phone numbers and email address for the Committee on Agriculture can be found at: http://www.lioc.org/Shambala/Committee.html

Write to Your Congressmen/women

Even if there is not a congressperson from your state on the Committee on Agriculture, you can still write to them expressing your concerns with the Shambala bill. As members of Congress, they have much greater access to their collegues, the members of the Committee on Agriculture, and can be a very effective "mouth-piece" for the anti-Shambala cause. If you can make them to understand why the Shambala bill is wrong, they could champion our cause and meet with their collegues to discuss the problems with the Shambala bill.

Also, if the Shambala bill is approved by the Committee on Agriculture, it will eventually be voted on by the entire House or Senate. At this point, your Congressperson must understand why Shambala is wrong and why they need to vote against it. This will be the last place to stop the bill before it becomes a law, please contact your Representatives and make your opinions and feelings known!

Show Your Cat

Most of the information that government officials have on exotic animals is second-hand, and comes mostly from Animal Rights organizations, which portray private ownership in a very, very negative light. First-hand exposure and experience with a cat will help clarify the situation for them. For many, it will be the first time that they have come in close contact with an exotic cat, and they will be able to experience, first-hand, the joy of interacting with the intelligent, charming and loving creatures that they are. When thinking about private husbandry, they will remember the time they pet the serval, long before they remember all those negative things the AR people told them.

If you have a handle-able cat, who does well in social situations, invite your Congressman to visit your cat and see for themselves the kind of relationship you have with your cat.

If you have a facility, with many cats, invite your Congressman to visit. Show him or her the large enclosures, the fresh food and water, the zoo balls, etc. Show them the love that you have for your animals, and the love the animals have for you. They will be seeing a side of private ownership that AR groups refuse to acknowledge.

Volunteer

The LIOC needs help researching, preparing information and distributing information. Calls need to be made, documents prepared, facts researched, etc. so that we can prove our case and fight this very large threat to private husbandry.

If you are interested in helping us, please contact Lynn Culver (culvers@voltage.net) or George Stowers (gstowers@twcny.rr.com). If you have a specialty (printing, internet/web, legal, lobbing, etc.) please let us know.

Also, if you have any ideas on how we can combat this, please let us know. Any and all ideas, contributions and comments are greatly appreciated!
