Remove Animal Abuse, Not Animals
If your representative says he/she thinks the Shambala
Bill is a good idea because many/most private sector animals are abused, try the following approach. Ask the representative if his/her opinion is based on
personal experience or on what they have heard from AR groups like PETA,
HSUS, or perhaps from Tippi Hedren directly. Most will have to admit their opinion
is based on information provided by others.
Tell them that some (a relative few) captive wild animals are indeed abused, and that is a real tragedy, and makes you very angry; however such
instances are the exception and not representative of all or even the
majority private owners. Ask them if it would make sense to require a permit
to have children, because a few parents abuse their children, or require
permits for domestic dogs & cats because some are abused/abandoned.
Point out that the LIOC-Endangered Species Conservation Federation estimates there are over 4,000 private owners of wild/exotic felines in the U.S. holding over 10,000 cats. If irresponsible ownership was as common as AR organization would have you believe, news stories
covering instances of abuse/abandonment would be in the news all over the
country every day.
If you have a handle-able cat, invite them to visit your
cat and see for themselves the kind of relationship you have with your cat.
