Endangered Species Conservation Federation

Responsible Ownership

The LIOC-Endangered Species Conservation Federation believes that private ownership of a wild feline is a privilege. A priviledge which carries with it an obligation to ensure that the health and safety of the animal, the animals species and the public is not significantly or unnecessarily threatened and, whenever practical, enhanced. Conformance to the following basic principles is fundamental to meeting these obligations:

  • Compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations.

  • Taking appropriate precautions to ensure the health and safety of the public is not jeopardized.

  • Ensuring, to the maximum extent practical, that the source of animals acquired does not threaten the viability of the species in the wild.

  • Providing adequate care and facilities for the animal's physical and psychological needs.

  • Concrete plans for continued care should you become unwilling or unable to provide it. (Don't assume a zoo or will take your animal.)

The concepts mentioned above form the basis of the LIOC-ESCF's Code of Conduct for Private Owners of Wild Felines. If you are either unwilling or unable to accept these responsibilities, please DO NOT GET A WILD FELINE.

A certificate outlining these principles can be found at: http://www.lioc.org/cert2.jpg

Please let us know via email if you would like a copy of this certificate.

We urge all owners of wild felines to hang a copy of this code on their wall as a constant reminder of the responsibility you have assumed, and to inform others of the commitment you have made.
